Spotlight: Summer School

Was the Lab School at EIU’s summer school program a punishment or privilege?

Summer School was an outstanding program mentioned often by alumni.   Students could learn about gardening, construction, small engine repair, and were able to participate in popular outdoor excursions.  On these excursions, the students would be taken to places like Fox Ridge or Lincoln Log Cabin State Park; where they would camp and learn how to build a fire, construct a bridge, or record nature sounds.

The articles featured below talk about a Scandinavian Festival that was organized and put on by seventh and eighth students during the Summer School of 1970.  Miss Patricia Green and Mrs. Betty Moore, associate teachers at the Lab School was able to guide these student's learning about Scandinavian customs and culture by letting the students organize into committees and research, plan, and host this event.  Traditional folk music, dancing, and food made this social studies unit lively and fun.
